Sandile Parirenyatwa

Sandile is a 22-year-old currently a student at Wits. Her current degree is a Bachelor of Arts and my majors are Law and International Relations. Her mental health journey began in her first year of university. She had moved to Cape Town to go to UCT and aside from really missing home and my family,  she also realized that she didn’t quite know who she was or who she wanted to be in the world – things just went downhill from there. She was working two jobs at the time and she would only ever leave my room to attend her shifts – which was an extremely hard task that took hours of convincing myself to get up. She stopped seeing friends and going out. When asked if everything was okay, she would always have a believable excuse. She fell into a deep depression and that’s when her and her mum agreed that she needed to move back home. She was fortunate enough to be able to afford therapy for a while and have a very supportive family - that is how she got back onto her feet. After a few years of getting to know herself, she can confidently say she is a a driven, empathetic and loving person. She loves spending time with my family, seeing friends and watching Netflix. She also enjoys working out as it’s a great way to clear her head. She chose to join Mindful(l) as without the support of my family and access to therapy, I am not sure if I would still be here today. I believe it is important for people suffering from mental health issues to have access to both support and therapy and that is what we strive to provide at Mindful(l).
